It is possible that the White Company used the Continental style, that being their theatre of operations.<br /><br />I read 'The White Company' as an 10-year-old in the form of a 'Classic Comic'. Years later I found the companion novel 'Sir Nigel', a prequel published 15 years after 'WC'. I have a feeling that Conan Doyle was not really at home with historical novels.
